Charolais GROUP BREEDPLAN is the genetic evaluation system currently adopted by the Charolais Society of Australia.

    BREEDPLAN is a modern genetic evaluation system for beef cattle which uses the world’s most advanced genetic evaluation system (based on Best Linear Unbiased Prediction (BLUP) technology) to produce Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs) of recorded cattle for a range of important production traits. BREEDPLAN EBVs take the guesswork out of selection decisions by providing beef producers with an objective assessment of an animal’s genetic potential. It offers the potential to accelerate genetic progress, tighten up breeding operations, improve productivity and increase prices for cattle sold for breeding and slaughter.

    A BREEDPLAN genetic evaluation is currently performed for the Charolais breed and includes animals from Australia and New Zealand. Within the Charolais evaluation, EBVs are published on individual Charolais animals for up to 16 different traits. These traits include:

    Birth Weight Scrotal Size Eye Muscle Area
    Milk Gestation Length Fat Depth
    200 Day Growth Calving Ease Direct Retail Beef Yield
    400 Day Weight Calving Ease Dtrs Intramuscular Fat
    600 Day Weight Carcase Weight
    Mature Cow Weight

    Charolais BREEDPLAN also generates and publishes three Selection Indexes being 1) Domestic 2) Export 3) Live Export.

    Southern Beef Technology Services (SBTS)

    SBTS is a joint initiative of Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA), the Agricultural Business Research Institute (ABRI) and Breed Societies that run the majority of their cattle in Southern Australia.

    SBTS provides the members of participating breed societies with technical support that enables them to maximise their understanding and use of the different genetic technologies that are available. For example, BREEDPLAN, BreedObject Selection Indexes, Internet Solutions, TakeStock and DNA based technologies.
